TRAINING
Nose Work

Picture
Nose Work is a detection style sport that allows your dog the opportunity to use their amazing scenting and searching abilities in a positive manner. It is a sport that is low impact, yet mentally and physically stimulating. Nose Work is perfect for all ages of dogs and people. It can be done anywhere – no special equipment required! This course, presented in a class format, is unique in that only one dog at a time is worked. This creates an environment that is especially helpful for the shy, rescued, fearful or reactive dog to work in.

Introduction to Nose Work. At this level, your dog is introduced to the age-old turtle shell game of “find it” in and under objects. Treats are hidden in a selected box amongst many other boxes. Lots of praise and treats from you reward your dog for “the find”. Eventually dogs will be searching for treats in and under a variety of objects in simulated rooms.

Introduction to Odor. In this next level of scent work training dogs are introduced to the essential oil of birch, which is paired with treats. Container and simulated room searches continue to be used while introducing exterior and vehicle searching. At this level emphasis is on handling skills and building your dog's problem solving skills with more creative hides.

Continuing Nose Work. This more advanced level has dogs locating the essential oil scent without it being paired with treats thus presenting more complicated searches. Both blind and known hides will be practiced helping handlers to learn to read their dog's body language when searching and finding the source of the odor. Handlers will continue to hone their own skills such as, how to motivate and reinforce their dog’s searching and how to get their dogs to pinpoint and indicate where the odor is.
